Access Control vs Ticket Verification — What's the Difference?

Organisers often use these terms interchangeably. They're not the same thing — and knowing the difference could change how you run your gate.

Two Modes, Two Jobs

When you open the Flentra app on event day, you choose a mode before you start scanning. The two options — Ticket Verification and Access Control — sound similar but serve very different purposes.

Ticket Verification

Ticket Verification answers one question: *Is this ticket real?*

When a steward scans a ticket in Verification Mode, the system checks the ticket against the database and returns a simple result — valid or invalid. It marks the ticket as used so it cannot be scanned again.

This mode is best for:

  • Single-entry events (concerts, comedy shows, award nights)
  • Situations where you only need to confirm legitimacy
  • Small gate teams managing high volumes quickly

Access Control

Access Control answers a different question: *Should this person be here right now?*

This mode is built for events with multiple zones, VIP areas, backstage access, or time-restricted entry. A ticket might be valid but not grant access to the VIP lounge. Access Control checks not just whether the ticket exists, but whether it carries the right permissions for the area being scanned.

This mode is best for:

  • Multi-zone festivals
  • Events with tiered ticketing (General, VIP, VVIP)
  • Conferences with session-level access control
  • Recurring entry (e.g. a two-day event where day-1 tickets shouldn't work on day 2)

Which One Do You Need?

For most Ugandan concerts and shows, Ticket Verification is sufficient and fast. For larger, structured events — marathons, expos, multi-stage festivals — Access Control gives you the granularity to manage every zone independently.

Flentra supports both on the same device. You can run Verification at the main gate and Access Control at the VIP entrance simultaneously, with different staff on each.

The Key Insight

The biggest mistake organisers make is treating the gate as a single checkpoint. Modern events have layers. Your ticket system should match your venue's structure. Flentra is built to handle both simple and complex scenarios — starting from the same app, the same login, the same event.
